Tinubu Condemns Barbaric Attacks in Plateau and Calls for Swift Arrest of Perpetrators

Several houses were said to have been set ablaze by the attackers who also looted farm produce and destroyed properties in the process.

Gunmen launched a brutal assault on more than 15 communities in the Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of the state on Christmas Eve, resulting in the tragic loss of over 115 lives.

During the horrifying incident, the assailants set numerous houses ablaze, looted farm produce, and ruthlessly destroyed properties. The attackers, armed with guns, unleashed violence that left the residents in shock. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for this heinous attack.

In response to the tragic incident, President Tinubu has ordered security agencies to promptly arrest those responsible for the attack. He emphasized immediate action, directing security forces to thoroughly sweep the affected area and apprehend the culprits. Additionally, the President has called for the swift mobilization of relief resources to aid surviving victims and ensure medical treatment for the wounded.

President Tinubu expressed condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, assuring Nigerians that those responsible for the violence would not escape justice. The attacks, described as “barbaric” by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, affected both the Bokkos and Barkin Ladi areas, resulting in a significant loss of lives. Gunfire continued to be reported, indicating an ongoing security situation in the region.

Amnesty International criticized the government’s response, stating that the authorities have failed to halt frequent deadly attacks on rural communities in Plateau State. The attacks in northwest and central Nigeria have been attributed to bandit militias, exacerbating existing social tensions fueled by competition for natural resources. President Tinubu, elected in February, has pledged to attract more investment to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
